Sadly, many older adults are abused, neglected, and exploited everyday in this country. This abuse occurs in multiple forms: physical abuse such as shoving or hitting, emotional abuse such as intimidating through yelling and threats or a non-verbal form such as ignoring the elder, neglect such as failure to meet the elder’s medical needs, and exploiting the elder by using their money without their knowledge or consent. Another type of abuse the elderly faces that many people don’t think of is sexual abuse.

If someone you know is being abused or even if you just suspect neglect or abuse there is a hotline to call. The hotline is ran by The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) and they serve as a valuable resource and advocate for many elderly persons. The hotline number is 1-800-677-1116. To learn more about the NCEA you can visit their website at: http://www.ncea.aoa.gov/ncearoot/Main_Site/index.aspx
